General Description: Boat Box Hot Springs is also known as Elkhart Hot Springs, This is a local hot spring soaker favorite with alot of foot traffic. Boat Box is named after the metal caldron bolted to the boulders along the Salmon River in the Sawtooth National Forest. Boat Box boasts the only and only caldron along a river in the United States.
Location: From Stanley, Idaho it is about 4 miles or about 7 minutes to drive to the hot springs.
Directions: From Stanley, Idaho take State Hwy 75 N Destination will be on the right 3.3 mi S
Accessibility: Boat Box Hot Springs is very accessible. It is right next to Highway 75. Be careful to park off the road. Slope is slippery to go down to the hot springs.
Hot Springs: Boat Box Hot Springs has a source of 110 degrees. The geothermal mineral water is pipped into the caldron. The temperature can be adjusted by moving the pipe that funnels the geothermal water in or out of the metal kettle. You can also bucket cold water from the Salmon River to adjust the temperature, Boat Box holds two to three people comfortably. Adjacent metal tub is two hot spring wading pools depending on the river runoff. The mineral water is 100% natural. No chemical treatment. Clothing is optional but be careful because it is close to the road in sight of all to see.
Hot Spring Tips: Boat Box Hot Springs gets alot of foot traffic because of its access especially in the summer with rafters. Bring a bucket so you can change the water temperature. This hot springs is pet friendly but not recommended. They need to leashed for safety of the road. No other services at this hot springs. Go river rafting in the summer along the Salmon River is highly recommended.
